Jonathan Edwards

I’m really excited about the new release called The Essential Edwards Collection.  I wholeheartedly believe everyone should read anything by Jonathan Edwards (not just the sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God).  The man was a pastor-theologian that pointed many to the love God has for us in awakening our hearts through the gospel of Jesus Christ to make much of Him and his glory.  Of course, some of the language from the 17th century is a little difficult to read, but this recent release attempts to make it very readable for anyone interested in reading Edwards.  Here is their product blurb…

Making the life and writings of Edwards easily understood by all!  Johnathan Edwards was a colonial, philosophical preacher, and theologian. To many he stands as the preeminent theologian and thinker of the American tradition. This series of five books covers Edwards’ life and major writings opening an accessible window into the heart and mind of the pastor-theologian. They unearth the choicest treasures of Edwards’ writings and present them to lay people for discovery and personal transformation. The Essential Edwards Collection proves you do not need to be a scholar to enjoy and benefit from the writings and life from Johnathan Edwards.

Yesterday was Jonathan Edwards 305th birthday.  This is a man of whose writings every Christian should read.  Yes, it is challenging, but the reward will be well worth it as he plunges you deep into the heart of God and into the blazing center of His glory.

“It appears that all that is ever spoken of in the Scripture as an ultimate end of God’s works is included in that one phrase, the glory of God… The refulgence shines upon and into the creature, and is reflected back to the luminary. The beams of glory come from God, and are something of God and are refunded back again to their original. So that the whole is of God, and in God, and to God; and he is the beginning, and the middle, and the end.”

Happy Resurrection Sunday!  (Actually, you can tell by the date of the post that I’m a day late…I was with the family and some friends so that’s the reason for a day late!)  For your enjoyment and reflection here is a quote from Jonathan Edwards…

The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of earthly friends, are but shadows; but God is the substance. These are but scattered beams, but God is the sun. These are but streams. But God is the ocean (Works, II, 244).

je_letter.gifAlways worth reading and you’ll be blown away by these resolutions of Jonathan Edwards.

Also….I’ll be changing the header (the picture that says 10ThirtyOneToGlory) from time to time…just to make it interesting!
